Toronto WiFi
Yesterday, the Toronto Hydro Co. announced plans to blanket the entire downtown core of Canada’s largest city with WiFi coverage (the Wikipedia entry on WiFi). Basically what this means is that anyone within the coverage area with an appropriate device (laptop, cell phone, etc.) can connect to this giant “hotspot” and surf the internet from wherever they may be.
There will be options to pay-as-you-go, buy prepaid minutes or subscribe for a monthly fee. All of which I am sure will be priced extremely competitively. This is exciting because it makes broadband access so ubiquitous throughout the downtown core. As time progresses you will see more and more cities hopping on this bandwagon because the benefits are so great. Plans are already underway in San Fransisco and Philadelphia, amongst others.
